Frailty
This production was a site-specific fusion of all the Shakespeare texts that was developed by the cast and director. Each performer played a number of roles throughout the production. When discussing the costumes with the director we wanted to embrace the game of thrones aesthetic while incorporating rich fabrics and embellishments. We worked with each garment often hand dying to achieve the colour combinations that were desired.
For the first act, the characters were in a banquet/party so the colours for all the costumes was bright and there was a lot of additional jewellery and embellishment. The second act takes place in a cave/forest and all characters were given a hooded cloak made in a boiled wool. King Lear's coat was hand sewn using multiple pieces of faux fur, hand stitched to the cloak, the wool was then treated with dye and glue to texture the wool and age it. All the cloaks were then dipped in to dye along the bottom edge to age the cloaks. The final act takes place near a river and in a lightly wooded area. Byt this point in the play, all the performers have shed their extravagant clothes and cloaks and are left in simple cotton dresses, shirts and trousers.
